Life Lessons in Queen Elizabeth’s Quotes

It’s been over a week since the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. I remember sharing a post on Instagram just a day after she passed away. And I wasn’t the only one; many of us did so. Even though I don’t consider myself a royalist, it was a way of paying tribute to a woman who shared so much wisdom during her reign. There is a lot we could learn from this inspiring woman. I have found encouragement and inspiration in many of the Queen’s quotes so I have chosen a few that are filled with great life lessons to share.

Queen’s ten memorable quotes full of life lessons

1. “When life seems hard, the courageous do not lie down and accept defeat; instead they are all the more determined to struggle for a better future” – Queens’s Christmas Broadcast 2008. The Queen pointed out that life is a gift full of blessings for which we should be thankful. The example of Jesus’s unselfish and sacrificial life can be an inspiration for us, showing us that happiness is more about giving than receiving.

2. “On our own, we cannot end wars or wipe out injustice, but the cumulative impact of thousands of small acts of goodness can be bigger than we imagine” – Queen’s Christmas Broadcast 2016. Queen Elisabeth II pointed towards the life of Jesus Christ in her message, although maligned, so impactful. Christ, therefore, is an example for us to see the value of doing small things with great love.

Queen’s quote about grief

3. “Grief is the price we pay for love” – Queen’s Message to New York after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001. There are moments of grief when nothing can be said to take the pain away.

4. “It’s worth remembering that it is often the small steps, not the giant leaps, that bring about the most lasting change” – Queen’s Christmas Broadcast 2019. Queen pointed out that whilst small steps may not seem like much at the time they are indeed real progress.

5. “I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service” – Queen’s Message on her 21st Birthday, 21 April 1947. Act of dedication with a reflection upon the fact that she will only be able to carry her work with the support of us all.

6. “We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return” – Queen’s Broadcast to the UK and the Commonwealth during the pandemic, April 2020. This was Queen’s message of hope during the pandemic. For me personally, this is a quote with a great life lesson. I also loved the Queen’s words, “We will meet again,” in that message, as they give me comfort in a time of grief.

7. “Goodwill is better than resentment, tolerance is better than revenge, compassion is better than anger, above all a lively concern for the interest of others as well as our own” – Queen’s Christmas Broadcast 1974, is also full of hope and encouragement. It reminds us that by acting in this spirit, we all can make a difference.

Queen’s quote about faith, family and friendship

8. “But through the many changes I have seen over the years, faith, family and friendship have been not only a constant for me but a source of personal comfort and reassurance” – Queen’s Christmas Broadcast, 2018. It tells us about the most crucial elements in life and who she has turned to for support.

9. “Everyone is our neighbour, no matter what race, creed or colour. The need to look after a fellow human being is far more important than any cultural or religious differences” – Queen’s Christmas Broadcast, 2004. Queen was drawing on the Parable of the Good Samaritan. The moral of the story is that we should put aside our differences and help those who are in need of help. Whilst living abroad how often have I noticed that people from other counties were more helpful than those from my own country?

10. “Each day is a new beginning, I know that the only way to live my life is to try to do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that the day brings, and to put my trust in God” – Queen’s Christmas Broadcast, 2002. Queen’s words are a reminder that inspiration and strength can be drawn from our faith. We can rely on our faith to guide us through the good and bad times.

What can we learn from Queen Elizabeth’s Quotes?

There are many inspirational and moving quotes from the Queen. And although the Queen, like the other royals, wasn’t allowed to share her views on areas such as politics, she still managed to offer plenty of wisdom in her messages. I believe that some of Queen’s quotes will go down amongst the most memorable in history.

Whilst I haven’t lived in England my whole life, I had huge respect for the Queen. I admired her dedication to her country and devotion to her duty and service. She was someone who liked people regardless of their religion, race or nationality. But I also admired her wicked sense of humour and her way of handling a crisis with decorum. And those are the qualities that we could all learn from her.

Although the Queen never gave an interview during her time on the throne, some of her speeches offered insight into her private life and thoughts. There are many powerful life lessons we can learn through the Queen’s quotes. Whatever you are going through in your life right now, I hope that this selection of her quotes will provide the encouragement and courage to help lift you up and keep going.
